IN MEMORIAM
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that
Founder Member and Honorary Committee Member
MIKE GILMORE
passed away on the morning of Thursday 24 May 2007.
All of us who knew Mike will know that he was battling with ill-health even before he became a member of OUGS Mainland Europe. Despite this, he was able to join us for the inaugural weekend in Basel in 2000, along with his wife, Jenny, where he was elected onto the Committee as treasurer.
For a long time Mike was convinced that his health would improve and he would be able to join us for further trips, but sadly, one episode followed another until it became apparent that his active geology days had passed. He resigned from the Committee, feeling that he could no longer do the post justice, but it was decided that he should remain as an honorary member and adviser, a task that he took seriously and he never failed to offer sensible advice when OUGSME had a problem, and several times contributed articles to the newsletter.
Mike loved geology, especially the geology surrounding him in his chosen home in France and would often write to tell me what he had seen. His mails were always full of humour, humour and courage that he showed to the end. I for one will miss him very much as I am sure those who had the good fortune to meet him will feel the same.
Our thoughts are with Jenny, who has cared for him all through his long illness. May she too find courage to overcome this loss.
Goodbye Mike. We will not forget you.
Annette
