1 December 2010 : Three links of the month added for December, all related in some way to the Rhine Graben, one of the topics to be discussed during our Field Trip in January (please see the Events page for more details). The first link takes you to a Wikipedia page giving information on the development of the North Sea area - plus a whole lot more! The second link is partly also a history lesson, in that it is concerned mainly with an earthquake that happened near Basel and destroyed lots of castles (not a good time to be a castle owner - or even a renter of a castle, if such a deal existed at that time). The third link describes, with diagrams, the regional tectonics from the Rhine Graben to the Po plain. The stats have been updated for November.

5 November 2010 : Two links of the month added for November. The first takes you to a site that gives information on various mineral and fossil fairs Worldwide; the second is the Wikipedia information on Parkstein, one of the many places we visited in the OUGSME October trip to Bavaria and Western Bohemia (and looking like a mini-sideways version of the Giant's Causeway). A few notes about that trip to be read below. The stats have been updated for October.

5 November 2010 : The October OUGSME trip to study the complicated fault and folding systems in NE Bavaria and NW Czech Republic, organised by our treasurer Mike Molloy, was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants, including three worthies from UK branches. Mike looked after us in his usual caring and fatherly way and we were lucky to have a bus driver who didn't kill us each time we stepped back into his bus with muddy boots; also with an excellent introduction to the KTB Continental Deep Drilling Project by the Head of the KTB Geocentre Dr. Frank Holzförster. The star of the show, in my estimation, was Dr. Andreas Peterek, who guided us for three and a half days, first in NE Bavaria and then into NW Czech Republic, showing us and describing for us the current geological landscape and how it was probably formed. The German and Czech authorities are working together to promote interest and knowledge of this area and our group can all, from personal experience, recommend a visit to the region. Not only lots of amazing places to view but also very nice places to stay, lovely beer to drink, and huge, tasty meals to savour! Reports on each days adventures have been commissioned and will duly be reported in the next Newsletter(s).

2 October 2010 : Two links of the month added for October. The first directs you to the Wikipedia information on Munich, the second takes you to a June 2000 report by Mike on his attempts to recover fossils from slabs and boulders delivered to shore up the banks of the river Isar. Great Fun! I'm sure that Mike will not take us into deep mud during the October trip, but it might be advisable to bring tough boots! The stats have been updated for September.

2 September 2010 : Two links of the month added for September, both included in the October post-examination OUGSME field trip to Bavaria and Western Bohemia. The stats have been updated for August.

1 August 2010 : Three links of the month added for August, the first features the spa town Karlovy Vary, which we will visit during the October post-examination OUGSME trip, the second a link to the Munich Mineral and Fossil Fair (different to that previously displayed) and the third to the good old Swiss Alps (plus a bit more alps going west and east from Switzerland). The stats have been updated for July.
